Brodick Castle, Garden & Country Park,
Isle of Arran, KA27 8HY. Tel (01770) 302202. Brodick Castle,
its gardens and country park stretch from the shore to the highest
peak on Arran. Crossing from the mainland, the journey is memorable
with spectacular views of Goatfell from the ferry. The original
castle was built some time after 1266 for the Stewarts of Menteith.
During the Wars of Independence it was held by the English until
retaken by the Scots in 1307. Today's visitor is more likely
to see the work that began in 1844, in effect to convert the
castle into a stately home for the Hamiltons. On the east coast of Isle of Arran. |
