The Highlands and Islands
of Scotland cover a vast area that includes mountain ranges of
sandstone and granite, many over 3000' with Ben Nevis, Britain's
higest mountain at 4406'.
Of Scotlands 790 islands,
130 are inhabited, with Orkney and Shetland being the northernmost
reaches of the British Isles.
Visitors might expect a
colder climate - Edinburgh is on the same line of latitude as
Moscow - but the winds are warmed by the Gulf Stream and the
east and west coasts enjoy mild climates, making possible the
beautiful botanical gardens at Inverewe, near Ullapool.
The "Great Glen",
a fault line running from Fort William to Inverness, contains
a chain of freshwater lochs - including the famous Loch Ness
- connected by the Caledonian Canal.
Visitors by train
can enjoy the spectacular scenery as the railway line clings
to the loch sides and tunnels through the mountain ranges.
Getting around the more
remote parts by car can be time- consuming as the twisting, sometimes
single track roads follow the jagged coastline for miles, but
the wide empty beaches of white sand and eagles circling the
rugged mountain tops will make your journey worthwhile.
