the heart of rural Essex, with markets held on Tuesdays. The
town prospered from the wool trade and has many beautiful buildings
from that period. Great Dunmow has easy access to Thaxted and
Saffron Walden, Finchingfield and Great Bardfield, and the 1,049
acres of Hatfield Forest, managed by the National Trust. Great
Dunmow is located just off the A120 road - the Roman Stane Street
- and six miles from Stansted airport. Visitors can enjoy the
old inns, good restaurants, and shopping in a traditional High
Street. Great Dunmow is renowned for its "Flitch Trials",
a bizarre July event that is part of an ancient ceremony to win
a "flitch" or side of bacon. The trials are held every
four years, and married couples who can prove they have not quarrelled
for a year are given a side of bacon. Great
Dunmow is 5 miles east of Stansted airport, 7 miles east
of Bishops Stortford and
