Granville - Normandy
 |
 |
 |
|
The city of Granville is located in
the Manche departement of Basse-Normandie. Granville is a seaside
resort, market and harbour town, built on a rocky point dominating
the Channel. The old walled upper town stands on a promontory
jutting out above the harbour and the lower town, which has a
bathing beach and promenades. Granville is a centre for yachtsmen
and tourists and has a boat service to the Channel Islands. It
is also a fishing port and has a thalassotherapy (medicinal use
of sea water and sea products) centre. The fortified Citadel
has long, narrow, parallel streets of forbidding grey-granite
18th century houses, with dramatic views up and down the coast,
across to Mont St-Michel and out to the Îles Chausey, whose
granite was quarried for the Mont St-Michel buildings. |
