Selby Abbey, The Crescent, Selby, North Yorkshire
YO8 4PU Tel. 01757 703123. Selby Abbey is unique in the North
of England, as the first monastery to be founded in the North
after the Norman Conquest and one of the few in England to have
survived as a parish church. Benedict of Auxerre founded the
abbey. It escaped the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and although
part was pulled down, the central nave survived and in 1618 it
became the parish church of Selby. It overlooks Selby's market
place with its market cross of 1790, a bustling place of activity
on Monday market days. www.selbyabbey.org.uk. About 9 miles west of Goole. |
