LE TRÉPORT is a seaside resort 30 kilometres east of Dieppe, on the border with Picardy. The seafront is bounded on one side by the Channel, on another by the harbour at the mouth of the river Bresle, and on the third by imposing 100-metre-high white chalk cliffs. The old town is higher up the slopes and there is a modern town further inland. The more sheltered harbourside quay with stone jetties and wooden piers, is lined with restaurants, souvenir shops and cafés.

Upper Normandy

Upper Normandy was created from two departments: Seine-Maritime and Eure. The stretch of seashore here is an impressive display of white cliffs giving the name the "Alabaster Coast". Normandy's upper coast has the Channel ports of Dieppe and Le Havre. Rouen is the regional capital, historically important with many fine churches and buildings, including the tallest cathedral tower in France and a complete medieval centre. Rouen lies on the Seine and is the nearest navigable point to Paris. The region's largest city is Le Havre.
