The Stour Valley, on the
border with Suffolk, is the area made famous by the painter Constable.
He was born here at Dedham Vale.
In the north - west of the
county is the village of Thaxted, dating from Saxon times with
half - timbered, colour washed houses. Saffron Walden is named
after the saffron crocus cultivated in the surrounding fields.
Colchester is Britain's
oldest recorded town, the capital of Roman Britain before London.
It is here that Boadicea alledgedly stormed the Roman Legion
in her chariot, and destroyed the temple.
Harwich has an interesting
old harbour and is an important port, with ferries to Scandinavia,
Germany and Holland.
