Dumfries

DumfriesWelcome to our page of information, attractions and places of interest around Dumfries. The Dumfries hotels listed below are either in the town or we have given a rough guide as to how far they are from Dumfries. From Dumfries you can explore the the Solway coast with miles of deserted sandy beaches, rocky coves and cliff-top paths; the Galloway Hills, an area of beautiful moors, mountains, lakes and rivers, and the Southern Upland Way, one of the most challenging long-distance footpaths in Scotland. We hope you enjoy your stay and find your ideal accommodation from our list of Dumfries hotels and/or the surrounding area.

Dumfries sits on the banks of the river Nith, a few miles from the Solway Firth. Dumfries flourished as a medieval seaport and trading centre and was known like its football club,as "The Queen of the South". Dumfries is an ancient town with a long and turbulent history. Today it is by far the biggest town in south west Scotland, the administrative centre for Dumfries and Galloway, and the focus of a large rural hinterland. Dumfries was founded as a Royal Burgh in 1186 on the east side of the lowest crossing point of the River Nith. Robert Burns spent the last years of his life in Dumfries, dying here in 1796. On the west side of the River Nith is the Robert Burns Centre, housed in what was once the Dumfries Mill.
