To the south of the Cotswolds is Devizes, a small market town in north Wiltshire famous for the 29 locks of the Kennet and Avon Canal rising 237 feet in 2½ miles. Wadworth Brewery supplies many of the local public houses. Devizes Castle stands on the site of a mediaeval 11th century wooden castle, which was destroyed in 1113.
