Referred to as the 'Gateway to Weardale', Crook sits on the main route from Durham and the East coast and the picturesque upper reaches of the River Wear. The town is steeped in history and offers the visitor an excellent variety of shops concentrated in a compact area. Crook is approximately 16km from the city of Durham and the A690 which connects Durham with Weardale. Once surrounded by over 20 coal mines, Crook used to be one of the main towns in the Durham Coalfield. Still a thriving community, employment in the area is now provided by a number of small and medium sized industrial estates both in Crook and in the neighbouring areas.
