 Beamish Museum is an open air museum where
you can go underground in a drift mine, visit the pit cottages,
Victorian schoolroom, a Victorian dentist and an old fashioned
sweet shop. A living, working experience of life as it was in
the Great North in the early 1800s and 1900s. Step on board our

Durham
Cathedral and Castle - a World Heritage Site and is only a short
drive away. Here you can visit the Tomb of St. Cuthbert and The
Venerable Bede. The Castle is now part of the University College

 Escomb church was built around 670
A.D & can be found in the village of Escomb on the west side
of Bishop Auckland close to Crook. Much of the stonework came
from the remains of the nearby Roman Fort at Binchester. Now
restored, it is one of the finest examples of early Christian
architecture in Northern Europe. Tours,educational visits and

Binchester was the largest Roman fort in County
Durham. A small part has been excavated and is open to view.
Most of the fort and the remains of the nearby civilian settlement
still lie buried in the surrounding fields. Close to Crook. |
