Crewe, a large town in south Cheshire, did not come to prominence until the 1830s, when the Grand Junction Railway company chose it as the site for its locomotive works (known in the surrounding area simply as Crewe Works). GJR chief engineer Joseph Locke helped lay out the town. From a population of just 70 in 1831, the town grew to 40,000 in 1871. Many of the buildings which exist today were opened or constructed before 1925 including The Edwardian Lyceum theatre, which today still hosts many top shows. From 1946 to 2002 Crewe was the home of Rolls-Royce and Bentley motor car production. Also see Crewe.

	The Sandbach Crosses are two heavily carved Saxon stone crosses located in the town of Sandbach. They are believed to date from the 9th century, to commemorate the advent of Christianity in the Kingdom of Mercia about 653 A.D. during the reign of the Saxon King Penda. They are decorated on all faces with carved figures, animals and vine scrolls. The taller cross shows biblical scenes and has a mutiliated head. The shorter cross has a truncated shaft with the mutilated head of another cross. About 5 miles northeast of Crewe.

	Cholmondeley Castle Gardens, Chlomondeley, Malpas SY14 8AH - Tel: 01829 720 383. Extensive ornamental gardens dominated by a romantic Gothic Castle, built in 1801 of local sandstone, with a beautiful Temple Water Garden, Rose Garden and many mixed borders. The gardens at Cholmondeley Castle were originally laid out when the 1st Marquess of Cholmondeley built the castle between 1801 and 1804. About 10 miles west of Crewe.
