This area in the heart of England has Herefordshire and Worcestershire to the north. These sleepy counties of fields and hedgerows have the Malvern hills to the west, the Cotswolds to their south and the flat plains of the Severn Valley and the Vale of Evesham in between.
To the east is Oxfordshire, with its famous university city of honey - coloured colleges and riverside views. The River Thames flows through the county with the chalk Chilterns, a wooded ridge across the south - eastern corner. The Oxfordshire Way is a 65 mile marked trail across this region from Bourton - on - the - Water in the Cotswolds to Henley - on - Thames in the Chilterns.
To the south and west are Wiltshire and Avon, with wonderful rolling chalk downs, important prehistoric sites and magnificent stately homes. The beautiful cities of Bristol and Bath are just 12 miles apart.
To the centre of this region is Gloucestershire with the Cotswolds characterised by charming villages of mellow stone, built in folds between the rolling wolds.
