Consett has associations with the Roman, Saxon, and Norman conquests. Before the early 1800s the Consett area was a wild and desolate place. Then came a degree of prosperity and a town built on industry. The iron ore deposits in the vicinity of nearby Shotley encouraged the growth of Consett. Once known as `Berry Edge', Consett began to grow after the finding of the Consett Iron and Steel works here in 1837. Travel along the A69 until junction with A68 signed Darlington and hotel is 12 miles along A68 on left. Travelling from South: Take the A1 North. Leave the A1 at Jct. 58 signed A68 to Corbridge. Follow A68 for 29 miles and hotel is on the right.

Station: HEXHAM. 7miles. Travelling South on the A1 - continue towards Newcastle. Bypassing Newcastle take the A69 signed towards Hexham, continue on the A69 until the 1st roundabout called Styford. Here take the 1st exit on the left, signed A68 to Darlington. Continue to the next roundabout. From here Slaley Hall is signed. Continue on the A68 to Kiln Pit Hill, following the sign, turn right.
