The
Old Man of Coniston is one of the Cumbrian classics at 2628ft,
its craggy bulk rising behind the village of Coniston. The views
from the summit are worth the 2-hour hike, to the Cumbrian coast
and across to Langdale, Windermere and Coniston itself. |

It was on Coniston Water that Donald Campbell
took his "Bluebird" in 1967, to better his own speed
record. The jet-powered craft hit an estimated 320 mph before
it hit a patch of turbulence. The Ruskin Museum at Coniston has
a gallery of memorabilia and photographs in tribute to him. |
