Castle Douglas lies just off the main A75 road from Dumfries to Stranraer at the north end of Carlingwark Loch. It serves as an important regional centre for a large area of rural Galloway. To the south west of the town are Threave Gardens, run by the National Trust for Scotland; while a mile or so further west is Historic Scotland's Threave Castle, the stronghold of the Black Douglases and spectacularly located on an island in the River Dee. Castle Douglas is a thriving market town and "Home of the Galloway Cattle". AttractionsThreave Castle, Castle Douglas. Threave Castle was once the stronghold of the Black Douglases, and is now owned by Historic Scotland. It is a massive late 14th century keep of five storeys and a garret. Threave Castle sits on an island in the River Dee and is accessed by boat. Visitors must ring a ship's bell to summon the boat to take them across the river. About 3 miles west of Castle Douglas.

Threave Garden is rich in diversity, with areas including an informal Rose Garden, wildflower meadowland and a one - acre walled garden with temperate glasshouse collection. It is also well known for its great displays of daffodils. About 1 mile west of Castle Douglas.

AttractionsOrchardton Tower, Near Palnackie, Dalbeattie, Dumfries & Galloway Tel: 0131 668 8800. Orchardton Tower is the only round tower-house in Scotland. It was built in the mid 15th century for John Carnys (or Cairns). A door at ground level leads to a cellar with a vaulted roof. None of the upper floors remain, but there is a spiral staircase within the thickness of the wall that leads up to the parapet and is covered by a small gabled cap-house. About 5 miles southeast of Castle Douglas.
