Bed and breakfast in Carlisle |
|
Bed and breakfast in Carlisle. Carlisle is the county
town of Cumbria and its largest city. Located in the very north
of England, it is just a few miles from the Scottish border.
The Romans established a settlement here, initially to serve
the forts on Hadrian's Wall. Carlisle Castle is a great medieval
fortress that is home to the Border Regiment Museum. Carlisle
became a great 19th century railway city because of its strategic
position, with 7 independent railway companies sharing the use
of Carlisle Citadel Station and the extensive goods yards. The
Station is an impressive building, built in 1847 by Sir William
Tite. Carlisle is the northern end of the famous 72 mile Settle-Carlisle
Railway. Steam trains are often seen at Carlisle station on special
charter trips. Also see Carlisle
& Carlisle attractions.
