Carlisle is located in the northwest of England,
just south of the border with Scoland. It is conveniently at
the end of the M6 motorway, reached from junctions 42, 43 or
44, all just a few minute from the town centre. |

Carlisle - Travel by train -
Carlisle has excellent local train services and links to London
and the rest of the UK. First North Western trains run along
Cumbria's coastline to St Bees at the western end of the Coast
to Coast walk. Arriva Trains Northern run local services through
Carlisle, with the Trans-Pennine Express route between the east
and west coasts via Manchester and Leeds. First Great Western
trains run along the north-west coast and into the Lake District.
From Carlisle, trains along the coast stop at Maryport, Workington,
St Bees, Ravenglass, Bootle, Barrow in Furness, Grange over Sands
and Carnforth before rejoining the mainline at Lancaster. Virgin
Trains also serve Carlisle providing cross-country services between
London Euston and Paddington, the Midlands, north-west England,
Wales and Scotland. Carlisle is the northern end of the famous
72 mile Settle-Carlisle Railway. Steam trains may often been
seen at Carlisle station on special charter trips. |
