is one of England's most venerable cities. Canterbury Cathedral,
St Augustine's Abbey and St Martin's Church together form a world
heritage site, attracting over 2.5 million visitors every year,
with the Roman and early Christian ruins, Norman castle and medieval
warren of Tudor dwellings. The view up Mercery Lane towards the
superbly ornate 16thcentury Christ Church Gate, is one of the
most famous and photographed in the city: a narrow, medieval
street of crooked , overhanging houses behind which loom the
