In 79 AD the Romans discovered a spring in Buxton Derbyshire from which 1500 gallons of pure water gushed every hour at a constant 28'C. The spring became so famous that Mary Queen of Scots was allowed by her captors to come here for treatment of her rheumatism. Today visitors to Buxton can fill their own water bottles from St. Ann's Well, a little street fountain in front of the Crescent (photo below). The Crescent originally built as 3 hotels and several baths, fell into disrepair and are only recently being restored. Also to see is the old Royal Devonshire, now part of Derby University, The Pavillion and The Opera House (photo). Buxton is 10 miles west of Bakewell, 10 miles east of Macclesfield and 15 miles SE of Stockport.
