Tugnet
Ice House, Tugnet, Spey Bay, Fochabers IV32 7DU. Tel: 01309 673
701. Tugnet Ice House is part of The Whale and Dolphin Conservation
Society Wildlife Centre in Spey Bay. It is the largest remaining
ice house in the country. Inside, the high, domed ceilings, cobbled
floors, chilly temperatures and echoes give the feeling of being
inside a cave. Once the focus of a thriving coastal salmon fishery,
the building is now preserved as a reminder of this past prosperity.
At the height of the salmon fishery, it was used to store river
ice throughout the year, which was packed with the salmon to
preserve them on their long journey to market. About 5 miles west of Buckie. |
