located on the A66 to the east of the county of Cumbria. It is
in two parts, the southern part is Church Brough (once called
Upper Brough) and lies on a former Roman road. The northern area,
Market Brough (formerly Lower Brough), is sited on a medieval
road. Church Brough's houses stand around a market square decorated
with a maypole (formerly a cross stood in the square), while
Market Brough has a wide and long main street. A market cross
on top of a clock tower and the late-Georgian Golden Fleece Inn
