Welcome to our page of bed and breakfast in Brough!
Brough is a small town located on the A66 to the east
of the county. It is in two parts, the southern part is Church
Brough (once called Upper Brough) and lies on a former Roman
road. The northern area, Market Brough (formerly Lower Brough),
is sited on a medieval road. The difference in the two villages
relates to their functions - Church Brough's houses stand around
a market square decorated with a maypole (formerly a cross stood
in the square), while Market Brough has a wide and long main
street. Market Brough held a weekly market with a charter granted
in 1330. Just south of the village, the Brough Hill Fair was
a popular spot for drovers to sell their horse, sheep, and cattle
with the buying and selling of fell ponies. On the edge of Brough,
standing guard over the A66, are the ruins of the majestic Brough
Castle (photo). |
