Attractions Smithills Hall and Estate, Smithills Dean Road, Bolton BL1 7NP- Tel: 01204 332377. Smithills Hall is one of the earliest and most important examples of a Lancashire manor house. A recent £1.8 million renovation scheme has restored additional rooms to their full splendour. The house mirrors the changes in fashion and living conditions from the late 14th to the late 19th century, having been developed and altered by generations of owners. Ring for opening times. Hall i'th' Wood (pronounced as "al" "i" "thwud") is an attractive, part-timbered, late medieval merchant's house dating from 1530 to 1648. The Hall is furnished with 17th and 18th century furniture and also includes pictures, ceramics and local history items. It is here that Samuel Crompton invented the spinning mule in 1779.
