Bolsover
Castle, perched high on a wooded hillside near Chesterfield,
is an enchanting place to visit. William the Conqueror gave Bolsover
Castle to his bailiff, William Peveril, who is believed to have
built a keep where Bolsover Castle now stands. The castle was
first leased to Sir Charles Cavendish, Bess of Hardwicks' son,
in 1608, and five years later he became the owner. Employing
Robert Smythson as his architect, Cavendish set about re-building
the castle. The tower, known today as the little castle, was
completed c1621, and building work continued with their sons
adding the terrace and riding school ranges. |
