Bodmin lies on the western edge of Bodmin Moor, equidistant
from the north and south Cornish coasts. It was an important
ecclesiastical centre, its church of St Petroc built in the 15th
century is the largest in Cornwall. Bodmin has numerous interesting
buildings including the Turret Clock, the Assize Hall, Shire
House and Bodmin Gaol. The Gilbert Memorial is a prominent landmark
occupying a commanding position on Bodmin Beacon, an area of
