Billingham was an important Medieval manor and from at least 1229 the Bishop of Durham took customs from ships landing on the Tees here. Billingham, across the Billingham Beck, to the north east of Norton, is best known as the site of the huge petro-chemical works of ICI but like Norton it also has ancient origins and its church has an Anglo-Saxon tower dating from about 1000 AD. The earliest chemical industry in the Billingham area was salt making which may have very early origins as an ancient salter's track ran through this area.

	Billingham Beck Valley Country Park Tel: 01642 360376 Billingham Beck Valley is one of Stockton Borough's most interesting areas of countryside with its colourful meadows, ponds, marsh and woodland. Designated a Local Nature Reserve in 1992, this valuable pocket of countryside has been preserved as a haven for wildlife and a place where people can explore, enjoy and learn about the countryside. About 3 miles west of Billingham.
	REDCAR RACECOURSE, The Racecourse, Redcar TS10 2BY Tel: 01642 484068. Racing has taken place at Redcar for many years – originally on the sands of Coatham – with the current site and company opening up for business in 1875. www.redcarracing.co.uk. About 10 miles east of Billingham.
	Preston Hall Museum, Yarm Road, Stockton-on-Tees. Tel: 01642 781184. The museum is best known for its Victorian Street and its many period rooms, giving a glimpse of domestic life in the area over the years. It has an impressive display of weaponry in its cellars, and also houses Stockton's most famous painting, the Dice Players by Georges de la Tour. Set in 112 acres of parkland, between Stockton and Yarm on A135. About 6 miles south of Billingham.
