Berkhamsted is a lively historic town set in a valley of the Chiltern hills with a history dating back beyond Saxon times. It is situated in the west of Hertfordshire, between the towns of Tring and Hemel Hempstead. Berkhamsted is important as it was the terminating point of the Norman invasion of 1066. William the Conqueror led the invading Norman army after the defeat of Harold II and the English, encircling London and crossing the Thames at Wallingford making for Berkhamsted, at which point the conquest was effectively complete.
