Chesters Roman Fort (Hadrian's Wall), Northumberland.
Chesters Fort was built to guard the Roman bridge which carried
Hadrian's Wall and the military road over the River North Tyne.
It was one of a series of permanent troop bases added soon after
the Wall was built. The fort is managed by English Heritage.
About 10 miles south of

Black
Middens Bastle House, near Bellingham. A stone, two-storey fortified
farmhouse, built during the 16th century and set in splendid
walking country on the Reivers Route. The site is owned by English
Heritage and is freely accessible in daylight hours. There is
a car park. About 7 miles
northwest of Bellingham. |
