The area described as Central Scotland is the
very heart of Scotland with spectacular and varied scenery. Here
are well-preserved medieval towns and castles, royal residences
and battle sites. The Trossachs are a unique and beautiful area
of high peaks, steep-sided glens, dramatic lochs and forests.
To the east is the kingdom of Fife, with coastal fishing villages,
sandy beaches and golf links. Glasgow is set on the banks of
the mighty river Clyde and is Scotland's largest city. It was
named European City of Culture in 1990. Edinburgh however is
the showcase capital of Scotland. It is a cosmopolitan and cultured
city, perched on a series of extinct volcanoes and rocky craggs,
