Cornwall's narrow
peninsula leads westwards from the River Tamar to the spectacular
granite cliffs of Land's End and the Atlantic ocean. Historic
fishing villages, secluded harbours, seaside resorts at Newquay,
Falmouth and St Ives and the natural beauty of the coastline
give Cornwall a character of its own, while inland the
countryside is dotted with remnants of its past mining industries.
The peninsula has the ideal conditions for energetic adventure
sports - sailing, surfing and rock-climbing - and for the gentler
pastimes of walking, bird-watching, painting and sea-fishing.
Thirty miles (48 km) across the sea to the southwest lie the
beautiful Isles of Scilly, an archipelago of about a hundred
islands, only five of them inhabited. |
