Egglestone
Abbey is a ruined 12th Century Premonstratensian abbey in a picturesque
setting above the River Tees dating from 1195. Turner painted

of the River Tees was the setting for Sir Walter Scotts

Otter Trust's North Pennines Reserve (Tel: 01986 893470) is a
230 acre wildlife reserve near Bowes. It is populated with British
and Asian otters, red and fallow deer, reindeer and rare breeds
of farm animals. There are bird hides overlooking wetland areas
as well as picnic sites and walks to enjoy.
