- ARBOR LOW STONE CIRCLE AND GIB HILL
TUMULUS (English Heritage)
Arbor Low, the 'Stonehenge of the North', is one of the best
examples in Britain of a prehistoric henge, a type of ceremonial
monument used in Neolithic and Bronze Age times, four thousand
years ago. Open throughout the year - via Upper Oldhams Farm.

Large range of natural water-worn caverns featuring stalactites,
stalagmites and Blue John Stone. Eight of the fourteen known
veins are found here. Castleton is the only known place where
Britain's rarest mineral occurs.

Standing by the River Churnet, this restored working mill is
dated 1752 and attributed to James Brindley, the renowned canal
builder. It also contains a museum with displays illustrating
the life and work of Brindley and the history of corn milling.

Home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. Chatsworth is one
of the grandest country homes in England, and known as 'The Palace
of the Peak'. The house is richly furnished and decorated with

The story of Chesterfield, from Roman fort to market town to
centre for engineering/mining concerns. A feature of special
interest is the builder's treadmill, used in the construction
of Chesterfield Parish Church, one of only five in the country.

Follow brown tourist signs at Cromford Village cross roads on
the A6, 3 miles south of Matlock and 15 miles north of Derby.
An international heritage site and the world's first successful
water powered cotton spinning mill. Guided tours, shops, restaurant.
Through 1996 a massive excavation uncovering exciting archaeological
remains of the 1779 mill. There is an ongoing restoration programme
and a guide will explain the history and plans for the future.

Chesterfield's famous landmark, the 'Crooked Spire' is the largest
Church in Derbyshire. Dedicated in 1234, its 228 foot spire is

Like a mini Bodnant Gardens, this beautiful 6-acre garden set
in the rolling Pennine Hills gives its visitors a wonderful opportunity
to experience a setting similar to a Himalayan Valley, but is
only 5 minutes away from the Goyt Valley and 15 minutes from
Buxton. The garden, with its wealth of Rhododendrons, trees,
shrubs and perennials, is a wonderful blend of colour and foliage
with streams and waterfalls completing the picture. Blue poppies,
species Rhododendrons and many rare trees, shrubs and perennials
are features of the Hardy Plant Nursery. The tea room provides

This beautiful 17th century manor house, situated in the heart
of the picturesque "plague village" of Eyam, offers
a glimpse of three centuries of family history in portraits,
furniture, costumes and accumulated family memorabilia.
Eyam Hall Buttery, in the award-winning restored stables, offers
an imaginative menu of light lunches, snacks and delicious cakes
- all home-baked. Eyam Hall Craft Centre houses seven workshops
where you can see craftspeople at work and purchase authentic
local products. Located approximately 10 miles from Sheffield,
Chesterfield and Buxton, Eyam is off the A623 Stockport-Chesterfield
road. Eyam Hall is in the centre of the village past the Church.

The Centre has two Exhibition Rooms, one illustrating the town's
history from Roman times, through Domesday and Industrial Revolution
to modern times. A collection of local newspapers from 1890s

change regularly, Centre Gift Shop, tea and coffee available.

Originally held by the illegitimate son of William the Conqueror,
Haddon has been owned by the Dukes of Rutland since the 16th
century. Little has been added since the reign of Henry VIII,
whose elder brother was a frequent visitor. Despite its time-worn
steps, no other medieval home has so successfully withstood the
ravages of time. Renowned throughout the world for its incredibly
romantic rose gardens. Flower Festival - 15-24 June. Open 1 April
to 30 September every day, 11 am-5 pm.

The pool surround has changed little since being built in 1936
and still has the original veranda and bandstand with a beautiful

The cable cars are just the start of a visit to the Heights of

The Trail covers 17 miles from High Peak Junction near Cromford
to Dowlow near Buxton and is a traffic-free route for horse riders,
cyclists, naturalists and walkers. All the information centres,
picnic sites, car parks and amenities along the Trail have been
designed to give visitors unspoilt access to the beautiful Peak
District countryside. At Parsley Hay, the Trail connects with
the Tissington Trail to Ashbourne.

A National Trust property, with 688 ha of open moorland, woodland
and farms in Peak District National Park, with dramatic views

Lodge, the former shooting lodge of the Duke of Rutland, and

Home of the Legh family for 600 years. Part of the original Elizabethan
house survives with 18th-19th century additions by Giacomo Leoni
and Lewis Wyatt. Set in extensive historic gardens and park,
home to red and fallow deer. Magnificent views of Pennine Hills
and Cheshire Plain. Setting for exterior filming of BBC's recent
adaptation of Jane Austen's novel "Pride and Prejudice".

The sanctuary is dedicated to rescuing animals that have been
abused and neglected. We have all types of animals, including

A simulated coal mine and magnificent model of the town as it
was in 1884 are two of the attractions to be seen in New Mills
Heritage and Information Centre. The Centre is housed in a refurbished
stone-built building of great character next to the bus station
and near central railway station. Displays on history of New
Mills, inter-active video - Domesday project. Various changing
temporary displays. Many interesting local walks including Torrs
Industrial Trail and the Sett Valley Trail. Open Tuesday to Friday,

Norman Motte and Bailey Castle in ruins. Built by William the

Poole's Cavern is a magnificent natural limestone cavern. The

Home of Sir Reresby and Lady Sitwell. Seven acres of formal gardens
stand in 300 acres of mature parkland, encompassing statues,
shaped yew hedges, water garden and lakes. The Sitwell museum
and art gallery (display of Fiori de Henriques sculptures) are
located in the Georgian stables along with craft workshops and
a cafe. Overlooking Rother Valley, equidistant from Sheffield
and Chesterfield on the A616, three miles from exit 30 of the
M1. A new 20th century exhibition of modern arts opened in May

This Trail open daily all year provides a traffic-free route
of 2 miles for walkers, cyclists and horse riders between New

Tissington Hall the home of the FitzHerbert family for more than
40 years opened to the public in 1998.
The Hall will be open on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons
in June and July starting on 1st June 2-5pm.
Open from 2-5pm each day. Access to the Hall will be on four
guided tours during the day only allowing a minimum of 15 and
a maximum of 25. Access to the gardens is unrestricted.
- The Old Coach House below the Hall
has been refurbished into a splendid catering establishment serving
lunches, snacks and afternoon teas throughout the year. Tickets
for the Hall will be sold through The Old Coach House. Sir Richard
will welcome enquiries from Groups or Societies at other times
of the year and will conduct tours of the Hall and gardens himself.
(Groups should be of a minimum of 15 and maximum of 25 persons).
Tours cost £6 per head. Stiletto shoes are banned and the
Hall is not suitable for wheelchairs.
