from a few farms in the early 19th Century to a large coal mining
village once coal was discovered. A large percentage of the streets
are terraced dwellings in long 'Colliery' Rows. Ashington was
once known as "The largest mining village in the world"
but despite this historic claim, Ashington has no remaining deep
mines. Ashington Colliery opened in 1867 and closed in 1988.
Its proud history is remembered at the nearby Woodhorn Colliery
Museum. Market Day in the town is Tuesday. There are a lot of
leisure services and two country parks, Wansbeck Riverside Country
Park and the Queen Elizabeth II Country Park at Woodhorn with
