Nestling on the banks of the river
Wye sits the pretty village of Ashford - in - the - Water. It
is located just north of Bakewell on the A6 in a picturesque
sweep of the beautiful Wye valley. Its "sheepwash"
is the oldest, narrowest and most picturesque of several bridges
spanning the river here (photo right). It was built originally
for packhorses but is now closed to all traffic and takes its
name from an adjacent stone enclosure in which sheep used to
be dipped. |
