Alfreton lies in Derbyshire, a county
associated with the Peak District (as well as parts of Staffordshire,
Yorkshire and Cheshire), while the northern part of the county
overlaps into the Pennines. Wedged in between Manchester, Sheffield
and Derby, the landscape comes in two forms with the harsh grey
gritstone of the Dark Peak contrasting with the pale southern
limestone hills of the White Peak. Here the deep-forested dales
are populated with small stone villages, walking trails along
former railway routes, complex cave systems and spectacular historic
country houses, the seats of the Dukes of Devonshire and Rutland. |
