ABERYSTWYTH CASTLE, Aberystwyth. It is late
13th century castle, now ruined, near the sites of three earlier
castles. Aberystwyth castle was built as a diamond-shaped concentric
fortress, with a gatehouses at each point. It was captured by
the Welsh in 1404 and then slighted in the Civil War. Open all

Tel: 01970 617642. The Aberystwyth Cliff Railway opened in 1896
and operated on a water balance system until electrification
in 1921. It is the longest electric cliff railway in Britain.
As the train climbs steadily its passengers are treated to breathtaking
views over the seaside town of Aberystwyth and the surrounding
West Wales landscape. In the mid-section of the journey the railway
is in a deep cutting where 12,000 tons of rock were excavated
during construction to allow the winding footpath to cross overhead

National Library of Wales is one of Britain's six copyright libraries,
and is entitled to recieve a copy of every book published in
the United Kingdom. The result is a vast collection of nearly
four million books that has required the building, situated on
Penglais Hill, to be extended a number of times to avoid running
